Tehran praises its complex, but the most important objects are protected by S-300 SAM.
In Iran, in June, events developed rapidly. The United States accused Tehran of sabotage on Saudi oil tankers. Trump announced in social networks that he would erase the Islamic Republic from the face of the earth. The Islamic Republic urgently adopted the Hordad-15 medium-range air defense system and showed a spectacular video of its successful tests. Trump decided not to wipe Iran off the face of the earth. Instead of bombers, reconnaissance aircraft were launched at Iran. This operation cost the US budget not cheaply – a newly-built Iranian Hordad-15 air defense system shot down a $ 200 million strategic reconnaissance unmanned aerial vehicle Q-4 Global Hawk.
When the Iranian air defense system was put into service, in the American special press they began to compare it with the Russian air defense system S-350. When the Hordad-15 missile sent into oblivion a strategic unmanned spy worth 200 million, it came to a comparison with the S-400. At the same time, it was sometimes suggested that the Iranian complex is more dangerous than the S-400.
What is known about “Hordad-15”? This air defense system relates to medium range systems. Airborne target radar with a phased antenna array detects a distance of 150 km. The firing range is 120 km. The interception height is 27 km. Simultaneously accompanied and fired up to 6 targets. Airplanes made using stealth technology are detected at a distance of 85 km, and they are amazed at 45 km. Deployment time is less than 5 minutes.
This is the data of the Ministry of Defense of Iran. From our side, we can add that the transport and launch containers “Hordad-15” are very similar to the TPK of the American Patriot air defense missile system. There are considerable external similarities with the American rocket of the Standard family and the Sayyad-3 SAM. It became a modification of the Sayyad-2 rocket used in previous Iranian air defense missile systems.
There is nothing particularly surprising here. Shortly before the Iranian Islamic Revolution, the Americans delivered a batch of SM-1MR missiles belonging to the Standard family to Tehran to upgrade two old destroyers. Soon, the Iranians transformed the SM-1MR into Mehrab missiles, designed to arm frigates. Subsequently, the land modification Sayyad-2 appeared. And in 2017, the mass production of Sayyad-3, which are distant relatives of the rockets created by General Dynamics, began.
That is, one of the two most important components of the new air defense system, the anti-aircraft missile, is not so new. It is in service with the Iranian army for two years. And two years ago, its characteristics were already announced, which coincide with the characteristics of the Hordad-15 complex.
For the first time, the characteristics of the detection range of conventional aircraft, as well as aircraft of low visibility. That is, the fifth generation fighter F-22 and F-35, as well as the strategic bomber B-2 Spirit. Detection provides radar with a phased array Navid.
It is also not new. This radar has been used for several years in the Talash air defense system.
It seems that there is no sense in comparing the capabilities of the Iranian air defense missile system with the S-400. They have completely different “weight categories”. The Russian system detects targets at a distance of 600 km, and intercepts at 400 km. The Iranians, these parameters are 150 km and 120 km. In addition, the S-400 seven missiles for any aerodynamic and ballistic purposes. Hordad-15 has only two, essentially the same. The S-400 has a special location system for detecting “invisible” enemy.
So the interception of a massive drone, whose cruising speed does not reach 500 km / h, in the airframe of which the stealth technology is not used, is a fairly simple task for the anti-aircraft missile system. And it would be surprising if the “Hordad-15” did not cope with it.
Well, now about S-350 Vityaz. The Vityaz has a specificity that distinguishes it from the “universal” complexes, which, for example, include the S-400. S-350, working in conjunction with the latest versions of the S-300 or S-400, should repel rocket attacks, intercept both ultra-high-speed ballistic missiles and low-flying cruise missiles. Therefore, it clearly corresponds to the characteristic of the lower height of interception – 5 meters.
Another feature of it is countering a massive rocket attack. For this purpose, 12 anti-aircraft missiles are located on one launcher. One complex has 36 rockets, the division has 144 ones. At the same time, the control system of the complex allows you to simultaneously accompany 32 targets and fire 16. The rate of fire is high. As a result, one complex is capable of intercepting AGM-86 or ARM-158 missiles, which carry 2–3 B-52 strategic bomber. Division S-350 is designed to repel several dozen cruise missiles launched by three squadrons of tactical aircraft.
The Iranian new air defense missile system is unable to solve this problem due to the limited number of missiles on the launcher. And this can be critical in the event of a conflict with the United States moving from the diplomatic phase to the military. Starting hostilities, Americans always stupidly put pressure on the chosen mass of the victim.
Instead of ground attack aircraft, ground forces on the battlefield will support a “flying howitzer” with fire?
If the “classic” air defense missile systems are focused on intercepting single targets following each other with a significant interval of time, then Vityaz solves the tasks of repelling massive attacks. Including swarms of UAVs, which soon will turn from experts’ forecasts into reality. And you have to be ready for it now.
Of course, the S-350 will insure long-range air defense systems in terms of intercepting aircraft that will manage to break through the first line of air defense.
And finally, the fact that the Iranians themselves do not consider their new air defense system the crown of military engineering thought, superior in terms of the “danger” to Russian complexes of recent developments. The most important objects of Iran are protecting the S-300MPU-1 air defense system received from Russia in 2016, developed in the mid-1990s.
Yes, the new Iranian air defense system has just appeared. However, the Talash air defense system has existed for 4 years already, in which, as mentioned above, the radar is used, which is part of the Hordad-15, as well as a missile, whose range is only 20 km less than the Hordad. But Tehran still preferred the Russian complex to protect the most important political bodies and military facilities.
