President of Republic of Korea gave interview
Mr. President, thank you for the opportunity to meet with you. We meet at your residence, the Blue House, just a few hours before your trip to Moscow on a state visit. This is the third meeting with the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin. What do you expect from this visit? And since this is your third meeting, how does your personal contact develop with our president?
Mun Jae-In: Before answering your question, I want to congratulate Russia on holding the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Successful performances of her team help to give this event a holiday atmosphere. The Russian team already scored five goals in the first match, arranging a real holiday for all Russians. I wish your team to continue in the same spirit and achieve excellent results.
Thank you for your kind words, Mr. President. I hope that the Korean team will be lucky during your visit to the game with Mexico.
Mun Jae-In : Thank you very much for your words. We have high hopes for the second game. I hope that our teams, both Russian and Korean, will play well and will meet each other in the semifinals.
As they say in Russia, we will knock on wood.
Mun Jae-In: We have a common vision with President Putin of the prospects for peace and prosperity on the Eurasian continent. Mr. President has his own policy for the development of the Far Eastern region of the Russian Federation and Siberia, and my policy is aimed at developing cooperation with eastern countries, including with Russia. These politicians have much in common. At the same time, Russia for Korea is a very important partner for joint development in the future.
How was the historic meeting of the leaders of the United States and the DPRK?
Mun Jae-In: We have a common goal with President Putin: to establish peace and achieve denuclearization on the Korean peninsula. This will necessarily lead to the activation of economic cooperation not only of the two Koreas. In the future, we can involve Russia in this process. When establishing a peace system on the Korean peninsula, we can talk about establishing a multilateral security mechanism in our region. We must strive for this. I can say that President Putin and I share a common goal and a common opinion in this sense, and together we are striving for this.
Up to this day, Russia has been providing us active assistance in this direction. For example, it actively supported sanctions against North Korea in the framework of the UN Security Council and fully implemented them.
Putin also always spoke about the need to solve the problems of the Korean peninsula exclusively by peaceful means.
Mr. President, you once said that you did not sleep the night from 11 to 12 June, as on June 12 there was a summit in Singapore of President Trump and Chairman Kim. How do you assess the results of this summit and how much did these results cost your sleepless night?
Mun Zhe Ying: The results of the summit of the United States and the DPRK in Singapore, frankly, exceeded all expectations. The meeting was fruitful. Confrontation and conflicts between North Korea and the United States lasted 70 years. Now it’s time for these two countries to move away from mutual hostility. A new historical era opens before us, when we can establish a system of lasting peace in the region.
At the end of the summit, the North stated that it was ready for complete denuclearization, and the United States confirmed its readiness to provide security guarantees to Pyongyang.
Both sides must now quickly implement these agreements. Negotiations are ongoing at the working level between the South and the North, between North Korea and the United States, and measures are being developed to implement these agreements.
The head of South Korea spoke about the end of hostility between his country, the DPRK and the US.
North Korea, to show its demonstration of readiness, closed its nuclear test site and spoke in favor of further closing the research center for the development of rocket engines.
North and South have jointly stopped broadcasting propaganda on the border, South Korea has already dismantled all propaganda facilities. Seoul and Washington have agreed to temporarily postpone joint military exercises while the peace process is in progress. Perhaps in the near future the North will return the US to the ashes of 200 American soldiers who died on its territory. Such peaceful actions can lay the foundation for further accelerating the dialogue between the countries concerned.
I urge all concerned parties to implement appropriate measures as soon as possible. North Korea should take concrete steps, and the US should provide comprehensive security guarantees.
Russia is a very important partner for joint development in the future for Korea.
In fairness, I must say that this summit between President Trump and President Kim was preceded by your historic meeting with President Kim on April 27 at the border of South and North Korea.
You then made a symbolic and at the same time a historic step on the territory of North Korea.
What are your impressions of this summit? How much you are satisfied with it and how you plan to further develop your relations with Chairman Kim?
