In the DPRK, they announced an agreement with Russia to hold a summit meeting. Expert Vladimir Terekhov told Sputnik radio such a meeting would be an important signal for peace.
Russia and North Korea are ready to hold talks at the highest level. The agreement was reached at the meeting of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Thursday. This is reported by the Central Telegraph Agency of Korea (CTK).
“In order to develop strategic and traditional Korean-Russian relations in accordance with the interests of both sides and the demand of a new era this year, when the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries is celebrated, an agreement was reached to intensify high-level exchanges, exchange and cooperation in in various spheres, in particular, to hold a meeting between the leaders of the DPRK and Russia,” said CTK.
A spokesman for the Russian president, Dmitry Peskov, said after the talks between Kim Jong-un and Sergey Lavrov on Thursday that it is premature to talk about the meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and the DPRK leader, the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry has not yet made a detailed report on his visit to North Korea.
Expert on the problems of the Asia-Pacific region Vladimir Terekhov on air radio Sputnik appreciated the importance of the agreement reached.
“This is an important event and such a meeting will be an important signal for the world. Koreans are generally very wary of their neighbors. The only exception is perhaps Russia – in both Koreas there is strong positive historical memory. On the agenda, I think, there may well be two economic projects : the construction of the Trans-Korean railway and the Trans-Korean pipeline with access to the Russian border, so the leaders have something to talk about not only on political topics, “said Vladimir Terekhov.
He suggested where and when the meeting could take place.
“Soon the SCO summit will take place in the Chinese city of Qingdao, the DPRK is not a member of the SCO, but the country hosting the event has the right to invite any leader.” In principle, one can imagine that (Chairman of the People’s Republic of China) Xi Jinping, during the summit in Qingdao, will invite the third meeting of Kim Jong-un, and negotiations between the North Korean leader and Vladimir Putin may be held on the margins of the summit , and it is possible that a special meeting will be held in one of the capitals – in Pyongyang or Moscow, “Vladimir Terekhov said.
The expert told on what conditions the US and the DPRK can agree on.
