In the Israeli media there were pictures from the satellite Eros-B. They clearly show that the S-300 Russian anti-aircraft missile systems in Syria are on alert.
– Three S-300 anti-aircraft missiles, which were placed in a vertical position, were first filmed by ImageSat International’s satellite after their arrival from Russia to Masyaf (October 2018). Of the four complexes, only one is now covered with a camouflage net, “the signature says under the satellite image. It will be clarified that the current tensions in the region and the vertical position of the anti-aircraft missile systems indicate an increase in the operational level and alertness.
The tension, this one, as you remember, began in September. Since then, a lot has changed. For example, the president of the United States suddenly announced the beginning of the withdrawal of the American contingent from Syria. The Iranians have reduced the number of their forces in the Arab Republic. And the Kurds suddenly rushed to negotiate with Assad.
However, it began a long time ago – for example, last year, active interaction between government and Kurdish structures was observed in Aleppo and Raqqa, plus everything else, in the summer there were rumors about attempts to sell the Kurdish-controlled oil to Damascus officials. But nothing came of it, at least with oil.
Now, when there are real risks of leaving the Americans, Kamyshly (the capital of the self-proclaimed Kurdish state Rozhava.) Is ready to make almost any deal with the government. However, while Washington is still deciding the future of its soldiers in the SAR, the Kurds are not in a hurry and, in fact, lead Damascus by the nose, without giving up anything, but without accepting anything. As seen in the SAR, changes are occurring – everyone is moving, everyone is striving for some kind of transformation. And what did Russia manage to do during this time?
Moscow was no exception, and some changes occurred in its foreign policy in the Middle East. Since large-scale military operations have not been conducted for a long time, the diplomatic component deserves special attention.
I remember Iran, with whom the Kremlin’s affairs have not been doing very well lately, but first of all, attention is paid to the contacts with Israel. Yes, we have always had uneasy relations with the Jewish state, but for the last decades everything has been smooth. Perhaps, for the reason that the states (namely, post-Soviet Russia and Israel.) never really seriously intersected in the geopolitical arena. But Syria has reduced. Israel has been here for a long time – almost from the very beginning of the local civil war. Russia came later, but immediately declared itself seriously. Netanyahu, in order not to tempt fate, took up the creation of a special channel of communication between the IDF and the Russian military. The case burned out, and we had no problems with Israel. And those that were, nobody noticed.
But here was the year 2018. Russia came close to being honored as one of the main saviors of Syria. The Kremlin began to actively promote peace initiatives, our officials began talking about projects to restore the Arab Republic, necessary investments, and so on. But then suddenly, Israel took and hit on some objects in the north-west of the SAR. And all would be fine if only 15 Russian military experts were not killed because of this. Everyone remembers what kind of crisis then flared up – Netanyahu, that impression, in just a couple of days, became even more bald, listening to the terrible comments of representatives of the Russian Ministry of Defense.
It is understandable – if anything, the situation will turn out, the more the Russians first spoke so rudely with seemingly inviolable Israel. For Tel Aviv, the situation became even worse when planes with S-300 complexes on board landed in Syria. And as they all made it clear to us then, the S-300 will no longer allow Israeli attacks. It is no coincidence that today’s alarming reports in the Israeli media.
But they did. Israel has several times openly attacked Syria, and near the location of these same S-300s. No reaction. No one said anything, no one did anything. Why so?
Earlier, we quoted the words of a military man related to the S-300 and the Syrian campaign. According to him, Israel is inviolable. The leadership almost personally explained to every military man that it was impossible under any circumstances to touch the Israelis. The IDF fighters, by the way, have the same installations, in any case, the leadership of our source and our comrades said so. So the supply of the S-300, in his opinion, was originally a performance, because all the people on the spot were well aware that no one would ever use these complexes as promised – against Israeli violators of the Syrian airspace.
Our other military source reports that the plans of the Russian side to attack Israeli aircraft were not really included. In general, according to the plan, the S-300 will be fully operational only in the event of the transfer of control over them to the Syrians. Then, perhaps, the threat for the Israeli pilots will indeed appear, but so far it’s far away – because of Israel’s persistent requests for the transfer of technology, it has to be pulled. And it seems that the real time will be much longer than previously scheduled.
Moreover, it is likely that installations will generally be moved away from the Syrian-Israeli border. The reason again lies in the requests of Tel Aviv, with whom the top political leadership of the Russian Federation is now actively trying to make some kind of deal. Which one is kept secret. Our question about whether there is truth in numerous statements by Israeli experts on the possibility of destroying the S-300 if necessary, the source answered in the affirmative.
The fact is that the S-300 is not a perfect weapon, but rather – already yesterday, and even the latest modifications will still be significantly inferior to modern counterparts. The same C-400, although the range of individual modifications is about the same. At the same time, a significant amount of other equipment is needed to effectively protect the S-300 from air attacks. Our resources in the SAR are currently quite limited. In addition, Israel has a lot of experience in countering the S-300 – the IDF pilots practiced various situations in Cyprus installations, which, by the way, are seriously lagging behind Syrian modifications in a number of characteristics. But still this factor can not be rejected in any case.
